Unit Technician – Louisiana Endoscopy Center (400 hours)

  • Assisted with patient admission, preoperative preparation, postoperative monitoring, and recovery support, gaining exposure to the full clinical care continuum.

  • Worked alongside nurses and physicians to support patient comfort, safety, and rehabilitation in a team-based clinical environment.

  • Developed patient-centered communication skills by assisting with mobility, safe transfers, and daily needs while helping patients feel comfortable, supported, and less anxious during vulnerable moments of care, such as assisting with clothing changes.

Clinical Assistant – Gastroenterology (150 hours)

  • Learned how thorough history-taking and accurate documentation directly influence diagnostic reasoning and treatment planning.

  • Developed the ability to synthesize complex patient information quickly while maintaining clarity and clinical relevance.

  • Gained insight into physician workflow and the role of effective communication in delivering efficient, high-quality patient care

Shadowing (50 hours)

  • Shadowed physicians across multiple specialties, including pediatric orthopedics, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, and dentistry.

  • Observed clinical consultations and surgical procedures to understand patient evaluation, diagnostic reasoning, and treatment planning.

  • Engaged with patients to contextualize clinical visits and observe effective physician–patient communication.

  • Assisted with limited, supervised non-clinical tasks (e.g., patient positioning for X-ray imaging), reinforcing patient safety and procedural awareness.

  • Participated in post-encounter discussions on treatment approaches and clinical outcomes, providing direct exposure to physician decision-making and patient care considerations.

Dental Surgical Assistant – Dr. Keith Lorio DDS (400 hours)

  • Assisted with patient reception and front-desk coordination, including organizing medical records, strengthening understanding of clinical workflow, documentation, and continuity of care.

  • Contributed to the fabrication of 3D-printed dental mouthpieces for TMJ and sleep disorder treatments, providing early exposure to device-based therapeutic design and translational applications relevant to biomedical research.

  • Supported dental procedures by assisting chairside with suctioning, maintaining a clear operative field, and following sterile technique, reinforcing procedural awareness essential for surgical and clinical training.

  • Developed patient-facing communication skills by explaining treatment steps and post-procedure care, supporting patient comfort, understanding, and adherence—skills directly transferable to physician practice.
